There is, There are

A book is on the table

Bu cümle, herhangi bir kitabın masanın üstünde bulunduğunu ifade eder. Bu cümlede özne "kitap" kelimesidir. Nesnelerin varlıkları nasıl ifade edilir görelim: Masanın üzerinde neler olduğunu ifade etmek için  "There is.., There are..." kalıplarını kullanırız; kullanım olarak "this/that" zamirleri ile aynıdır. Varlık ifadesi bu şekilde yapılır. İngilizce there is / there are kalıbı Türkçe deki " vardır " ifadesine benzer. Tek dikkat etmemiz gereken nokta, bahsettiğimiz nesnenin tekil veya çoğul olmasıdır.

There is a book on the table. There are books on the table. There is a bug between the curtains. There are four wheels on a car. There is a mouse in the house. There are 2 dogs next to that tree.

Kısaltma uygulanabilir:

There's coat in the closet.

 

Negatif yapılabilir:

There isn't a dog in a bus. There aren't any apples in the bag.

Ancak pratikte "There is no..." şeklinde kullanmak daha uygun olur.

There is no money in my pocket. There are no cars on the street.

Soru haline dönüştürülebilir:

Is there a telephone in your room? Isn't there a difference between these two pictures? Are there kittens in your garden? Aren't there any trees in your garden?
